Machinery & equipment (M&E) valuation is the discipline of estimating the value of plant, machinery, tools and equipment — from a single CNC machine to an entire production line. It is essential for financial reporting, lending, insurance, sale, and dispute resolution.
When is M&E valuation needed?
- Financial reporting and asset revaluation (IFRS)
- Securing finance or leasing against equipment
- Insurance cover and claims
- Mergers, acquisitions, sale or liquidation
The three approaches
As with all valuation, three approaches apply — cost, market and income. For machinery and equipment, the cost approach is usually the backbone: it estimates replacement or reproduction cost, then deducts depreciation.
Understanding depreciation
Depreciation in M&E valuation has three forms: physical deterioration (wear and age), functional obsolescence (outdated design or capacity), and economic obsolescence (external market factors). Reading these correctly is what separates a credible valuation from a guess.
Getting started
Begin with solid fundamentals: asset identification, inspection, data collection, and the cost approach. From there you can move into advanced topics and expert report writing.
